Founded in 2004, Advanced Concepts was born. One of the greatest supporting keystones for the company actually started twelve years prior to that when I first took my SSAT or entrance exam to Stuyvesant high school. I had unfortunately been directed to the inappropriate test room because of a typo in my last name. Due to this fact, I had started my SSAT test over twenty minutes later than the other students. I figured that if I was to have a fighting chance, I would have to make educated guesses for the first section and have to make up ground on the following sections. You know what was the weird part? I had no idea what the next section was and what type of questions to expect. My family wasn't richest family in he world and since I was a first generation son, there was no one before me to guide me in the right direction. I made educated guesses along the way and used whatever knowledge I had accumulated over the years to use on the reading sections. To make a long story short, I was able to make the best of the situation and ended up scoring enough points to gain acceptance to Bronx Science. I had always scored in the top of my class every year prior to entering high school and realized that I had a knack for test taking and speed reading. Throughout college I demonstrated the same amazing ability in all my classes. I frequently scored in the top 1% of my classes without having to purchase a textbook or re-evaluate all of the content of my class lectures. What I discovered was amazing. For canned government exams, I scored extremely well and for classes where professors made up their own exams, I would do equally well because I knew what topics were important and which subjects would be the covered on an exam. My friends and professors then shared with me even more insight as to how standardized exams are created. I teamed this knowledge with several friends who have actually submitted problems for the SAT before and a new technique was born. Not only was I able to become a role model student in college, I also was able to win acclaim in our local newspaper for an article I had typed up for English class while I was riding the bus on the way to class. This was further demonstrated twelve years later when I was able to tutor my god-sister from Taiwan. She had moved back to America after about a eight year hiatus and was lacking in her verbal score fo the SAT. Coming from Taiwan, she was particularily good with math but still had difficulties reading the questions and understanding what the test was asking for. After about a two hour crash course the day before her SAT, she was able to improve a remarkable 120 points in just her verbal score alone. She told me that I should bring out this knowledge in a school of some sort. How it was incredible! Hearing her comments sparked a fire inside me. How good it felt to help my very own godsister improve her SAT score and eventually make it to SUNY Stonybrook with very limited English the day before the big test. But why would a person who is making good money as an AVP at a very prestigious company quit his job to tutor? It was unfathomable. I decided to start this as a hobby of mine; tutoring. Over the past two years, I was able to be referred to some tremendous parents and kids who have all become my friends and family. Without advertising my skill, I was able to amass over 500 students over a period of just two years on just the weekends alone. Two years had past and I was soon promoted to VP of Structured FInance within Fixed Income. This was an incredible position as I was still growing and marked as one of the youngest VP's ever this financial services company has ever seen. About a year later, I did something crazy. I quit my job. I realized that finance is the field I want to return to but if I was to start my own business and to help families out there with my overwhelming knowledge about test taking and the college application process, I would have to put in at least a few months worth of effort to professionally initiate a startup. Which brings us to today. Which brings us to Advanced Concepts. Proudly founded in 2004 and going. Welcome to a new world of thinking and to a new way of learning. Sincerely Yours, Tinko Tau President
